The setup is this: There are 26 closed briefcases containing cash values ranging from $0.01 to $1,000,000. At the start of the game, the contestant picks one of those briefcases. The show then sets that briefcase aside, and they don’t show the contents of it to the player. The goal of the game is to win as much of the million dollars as possible.

At this point, the contestant progresses through a series of rounds. Each round, the contestant must choose a number of briefcases to open. The player opens six in the first round, five in the second, four in the third and so forth. Once a briefcase opens, the player loses the cash amount contained within. Any time a player discards an amount that is less than one million, it increases the odds that the player has the one million in their briefcase.

The reason why those odds are important is that the player can sell their chosen briefcase to the banker. After each round, the banker will make an offer to buy the briefcase. If the player has done well in a round, the offer will go up, and if the player has done poorly, the offer will go down or remain. So the goal for the player is to play the odds appropriately by refusing the deal when the offer is less than the expected value of their briefcase or by accepting the deal (thereby ending the game) when the offer is equal to or greater than the expected value of the case.
